Three terms worth knowing
Six terms you'll encounter around chibi art.
Chibi
Japanese slang for 'short' or 'small'. In manga and anime it describes a deliberately deformed cute style — oversized head, tiny body, exaggerated expression.
Head-to-body ratio
Chibi runs about two to three heads tall. Standard anime runs six to eight. That single number is most of what separates the two styles.
Kawaii
Japanese for 'cute' — an aesthetic, not a proportion. Chibi is usually kawaii; plenty of kawaii art is not chibi.
The comic-relief convention chibi comes from — a serious story dropping into chibi for a beat — is a manga device, and it still works. You can mix chibi panels into a normal-proportion story in the manga generator.
Make a chibi from your photo
Here is the part most chibi tools do not tell you. Chibi throws away facial geometry deliberately — bone structure, nose shape, the proportions that make your face yours. That is not the model failing; it is the definition of the style. A chibi that preserved your face shape would not be a chibi.
What does carry across from a photo is your hair colour and style, eye colour, skin tone, and what you are wearing. In practice that is usually enough — people who know you recognise the result, because those four things are most of how anyone identifies anyone at a glance. But if you want a likeness that keeps your actual face, pick anime or cartoon on the same picker instead. They hold far more of it.
What makes a good source photo: a clear head-and-shoulders crop, even lighting, facing roughly forward, no heavy filter already applied. Since the face is being redrawn rather than traced, what the model needs from the photo is the colour information — so a well-lit shot matters more than a sharp one.
What does not work: very small faces in group shots, extreme side profiles, and photos where the hair or clothing is hard to make out. Those are exactly the four anchors chibi relies on, so losing them leaves the model inventing.
One more thing, and it matters: only upload photos of other people with their consent.
What people use these for
Chibi survives being shrunk, which is most of the reason it exists as a style and all of the reason people want it. A face rendered in fine detail turns to mush at 64 pixels; a chibi face still reads.
Avatars and profile pictures
The most common use by a distance. Download the PNG and upload it anywhere. Discord accepts a minimum of 128×128 and looks best at 1024×1024 — centre the face, since it crops to a circle.
Gift art
A chibi of someone, or of two people, as a birthday or anniversary thing. Describe both in the text field if you do not want to upload a photo of another person.
Character sheets
A chibi form alongside a full-proportion design is an old convention in comics production, and it is still how most OC sheets are laid out.
Stickers — with one caveat
Output is a flat PNG at the generated aspect ratio. There is no transparent background and no die-cut, so it is crop-ready rather than a finished sticker file. Worth knowing before you plan a pack around it.

Describe the character in the text field — hair, colouring, clothing, expression, whatever makes them recognisable — and you get a chibi of them without uploading anything. Chibi or kawaii — which do you mean?
Chibi is a proportion; kawaii is an aesthetic. Chibi means roughly two to three heads tall with the face simplified to match. Kawaii just means cute — pastels, softness, big eyes — and it can sit on any proportion at all. Most chibi reads as kawaii. Plenty of kawaii art is not chibi in the slightest.
Which matters here only because it changes what you should pick. If what you want is the exaggerated proportion, chibi is the style. If what you want is the soft cute look on a normal figure, anime will get you closer.
