Kishōtenketsu (起承転結) is a 4-part Japanese narrative structure — Ki (introduction), Shō (development), Ten (twist), Ketsu (conclusion) — that does NOT require conflict. The story turns on a recontextualizing twist instead of an escalating battle. Most slice-of-life anime and yonkoma manga use it pure; most shonen blends it with Western 3-act.

Why it produces anime-native stories: Kishōtenketsu is the underlying grammar of most classic anime and manga. Slice-of-life shows (Yotsuba&!, K-On!) use it pure — no antagonist, no conflict escalation, story turns on a moment of recontextualization. Shonen (Naruto, MHA) blends Kishōtenketsu with Western 3-act to add conflict scaffolding while preserving the twist-based pacing.
Western 3-act comparison: Western 3-act structure (setup → confrontation → resolution) requires escalating conflict as its driver. Kishōtenketsu doesn't — the twist (Ten) recontextualizes rather than escalates. A slice-of-life story about a barista's ordinary day can be a complete Kishōtenketsu story; it can't be a complete Western 3-act.
Switching to 3-act: you can request Western 3-act structure in your brief if your story genuinely needs escalating conflict (shonen tournament arc, mecha battle, war story). The tool accepts either structure; Kishōtenketsu is only the default.
